Level 1, Level 2, and Why It Matters

Every EV ships with a Level 1 cord that plugs into a standard outlet. It works, but it is slow — a few miles of range per hour. Fine for a short commute, painful for anything more.

A Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts, like a dryer. It typically adds 20 to 40 miles of range per hour and refills most EVs overnight. If you drive real Valley miles — and most of us do — Level 2 is the difference between waking up full every morning and planning your week around a trickle. Hardwired vs. Plug-In

You have two routes. Plug-in means we install a 240-volt outlet — usually a NEMA 14-50 — and you plug in a portable charging unit. Hardwired means a wall-mounted charger wired straight into its own circuit.

Hardwired units usually support faster charging and skip the outlet, but the wall unit adds equipment cost. Current code also calls for GFCI protection on the plug-in route, which means a specialty breaker. Neither choice is wrong — it depends on your car, your panel, and how you drive.

The Big Cost Drivers

When two quotes differ, it is almost always one of these. None of them are exotic — they are the same questions any licensed electrician should walk through before naming a number:

  • Panel capacity — a 200-amp panel with headroom is a quick yes; a full 100-amp panel may need an upgrade or a load-management device first
  • Breaker space — a crowded panel can sometimes take a tandem breaker or a small subpanel instead of a full upgrade
  • Distance from panel to garage — every foot of wire, conduit, and labor adds up
  • Wire gauge — a 60-amp circuit needs heavier copper than a 40-amp circuit, and copper is not cheap
  • Wall type and routing — fishing wire through finished drywall takes longer than running conduit across an open garage
  • Permit and inspection — a legitimate install is permitted and inspected, and the fee varies by city
  • The load calculation — the NEC requires the math showing your service can handle the new circuit

So What Do Installs Actually Cost?

With those drivers in mind: typical Arizona quotes often land between $600 and $1,500 when the panel is near the garage and has both capacity and breaker space. Long wire runs, finished walls, or heavier circuits often push jobs into the $1,500 to $3,000 range.

A load-management device is sometimes a smart middle path: it pauses charging while big appliances run, letting a smaller service carry a charger safely.

Both major Valley utilities — SRP and APS — offer time-of-use and EV-specific plans that make overnight charging cheaper. Charging during off-peak hours can meaningfully cut your cost per mile, and a Level 2 charger makes overnight-only charging easy because the car fills up fast.
