Bonding connects every piece of metal around the pool — pump, rails, ladder, even the rebar in the deck — into one grid, so no voltage difference can build up and pass through a swimmer's body. GFCI protection is the backstop: it senses current leaking where it should not go and cuts power in a fraction of a second. Article 680 requires both, for good reason. Bonding keeps a shock from forming. GFCI shuts one down if it ever starts.

I feel a tingle when I touch the pool rail. What do I do?
Get everyone out of the water immediately and shut off the pool equipment breaker. A tingle means stray voltage is reaching the water or the metal around it — usually a bonding or equipment fault — and it can get worse without warning. Then call us. We answer around the clock, and we treat this as an emergency call.
Why does my pool pump keep tripping the GFCI?
Sometimes an aging pump motor leaks current, and the GFCI is doing its job by tripping. Other times the culprit is a wet junction box, damaged insulation, or a worn breaker itself. Whatever you do, do not swap in a non-GFCI breaker to stop the tripping. We test the circuit, find the actual leak, and fix that.
Does my older pool have to meet today's code?
Existing wiring generally is not forced up to current code until you modify it — but new equipment, new circuits, and repairs are held to today's rules. More important: bonding and GFCI protection are about keeping swimmers alive, not paperwork. If your pool is missing either one, fix it no matter what is technically required.
